I've been a Primephonic subscriber for the past 3 years. It's excellent. I hope Apple enhances, rather than detracts from its service. I'm pleased to both get a refund of a fairly recently renewed membership - along with the six month free trial. We'll see. There's still the Idagio service. I tried both Idagio and Primephonics before committing to Primephonics. As both improved their product, it may very well be that Idagio might have been my choice if I were selecting a service today.

I wonder what they're going to do that'll make it different from Apple Music.

For one think, stop calling individual tracks "songs."

A decision for which Steven Jobs should be assigned to hell where he must listen to the song “Sugar Sugar” on an endless loop.

Apple's latest Apple Music beta app for Android may have revealed the name of the company's forthcoming app dedicated to classical music, suggesting a release might not be too far away.

          apple music android listen now
Last year, Apple announced the purchase of classical music streaming service Primephonic, which features search and browse functionality specially optimized for classical music.

Apple said that the best elements of Primephonic would become a part of ‌‌Apple Music‌, providing subscribers with an improved classical music experience.

The company also said it would also launch a new ‌Apple Music‌ app in 2022 dedicated to classical music, combining Primephonic's user interface and specializations for classical music with ‌‌Apple Music‌‌ and features such as Lossless and Spatial Audio.

The name of the forthcoming dedicated app was not mentioned at the time. However, lines of code discovered by 9to5Google in the ‌Apple Music‌ beta on Android suggest it could be called "Apple Classical," with the code string referring to the ability to open a compatible track directly in the optimized service.

Apple recently advertised a job for a UX Designer to work on the new standalone music app. According to the job description, the candidate would be expected to "provide UX expertise and new perspectives specifically for Primephonic" in order to help realize a distinct experience for classical music that would include "visual, audial, and haptic" aspects.

While the job listing suggested that the Primephonic brand will persist in some form as part of Apple's classical offering, it could well exist as a sub-section of the service under an umbrella name, and "Apple Classical" would seem to fit the bill.

            Hopefully Spotify does something similar.

We have a Spotify family subscription for the kids and I can't justify another subscription just for my classical shit.

@kluurs, just curious, you already have a huge collection of classical music CDs and LPs, why do you still subscribe to streaming services for classical music? Have you cut back on collecting since you started subscribing to streaming services?

I for one used to have a large collection of classical music CDs, but CDs are just too inconvenient. I disposed them and I don't even have a CD player anymore.

Then I used to have a big collection of classical MP3 files, but at some point it became too inconvenient to maintain the collection.

So, these days I'm YTing and streaming everything.

I subscribed to Primephonic when it existed. I found it decent and convenient. Apple had hinted that their classical product would release in January and gave me a free 6 months of Apple music while I wait for the new service.

Yes, I have cut back on acquisitions due to the nature of things. Interestingly, a lot of people have not cut back. And I do still purchase some things that haven't made it to streaming.

I do still listen to CDs on occasion, no so much on LPs.

There are references to the upcoming "Apple Classical" app that Apple has in development to complement Apple Music, suggesting the standalone app could soon see a launch. There are "Open in Apple Classical" and "Open this in the new app designed for classical music" in the Music app code, but the Classical app has not yet launched.
                    image.jpeg
Apple acquired classical music streaming service Primephonic back in August 2021 and said that it would be building a new classical music experience for ‌Apple Music‌. Apple is planning to launch a new standalone app dedicated to classical music, and the app will combine Primephonic's user interface and specializations for classical music with ‌‌Apple Music‌‌ and features such as Lossless and Spatial Audio. Apple has not provided details on when the app might come out, but preparations are clearly being made.

I was a Primephonic subscriber. When Apple bought Primephonic, they refunded a pro-rated portion of my annual fee and gave me six months of Apple Music for free. I assumed that Apple intended that their new music service would launch within six months of the acquisition of Primephonic. It's been 8 months.

@George-K INteresting article. I did not realize how complicated it was for classical music.

(PS. I guess one way to make the article longer is to repeat the paragraph three times. LOL)

Let's see if it's October though I've also heard there are suspicians for early 2023. It will be interesting to see if and how it is enhanced from the original Primephonic of which I was a subscriber. Apple Music itself isn't bad. It will also be interesting to see pricing. A lot of orchestras, chamber groups, and even individual artists have started doing their own thing, bypassing labels. YouTube is a home for much classical music.
