This keeps happening with him. Interesting.

About 10 years after a right-leaning idea has been established as incontrovertible truth on TNCR, certain parts of leftist pop culture will fearfully look around and whisper, 'is it ok to say this'? Then, an edge-lord among them will say it out loud, to a mixture of silence, gasps, and applause. That person will be Bill Maher.

That wasn't always his game, though. Maher has been pretty consistent with his place among the partisan spectrum. Decades back, he was getting on Democrats' case because they weren't progressive enough to his liking. He felt their greatest failure was that their desire for votes led to passivity and milquetoast stances.
Also interesting to me was the way Fox framed this. In order to report on a staunch lefty agreeing with them on Afghanistan, they seemed very comfortable with his total mocking of American patriotism. It's interesting they saw Afghanistan as the greater point.

30 years ago he was far left. His positions haven't shifted that I know of, but that position is no longer far-left. I do wonder if he will actually shift positions like Dennis Miller, or just stay where he's at. Sooner or later the left will turn on him...

That's what I'm saying, yeah. How they eventually attempt to cancel Maher will be fascinating.
My mom, for example, is absolutely convinced Nick Sandmann is a terrible human being. Because she saw it on CNN. But she also hangs on every word Maher says, and always has as far as I can tell. Where she falls on that inevitable divide is going to be interesting, and a lot of others her age will be in similar positions.

30 years ago he was a far-left douchebag. Now he's a centrist douchebag.
Not everything changes
I must admit, he does make me laugh, but I don't think I'd want to hang out with him.
Maybe people like Mayer can bring some sanity back to the lefties, however I rather doubt it.

I never thought I'd see the day Bill Maher was the litmus test for the far left.
