Good concise analysis, by no means off the mark.
FWIW, I worked alongside Chris Alexander in the late 90's when he was Director for East European Trade desks in Dept. Of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Ottawa. I can say that he really did not understand the needs of business and industry but was very much a gov't policy wonk on trade and investment issues. He was probably one of the youngest Ambassadors ever appointed when he was sent to Kabul after the initial fall of the Taliban in the wake of NATO occupation.

Any Canadians left in Afghanistan? If so, how are they getting out?

CDN G'ovt response is less than stellar, in fact it is dismal. It won't disclose how Canadians are in the country - from what I understand most have been already evacuated by third countries such as the US. Yet we are sending a few aircraft to Kabul to evacuate Afghans.
Canada is just as culpable, if not more so, as any other occupying Western country in this mess called Afghanistan.

I think it was the statement about emails that embarrassed them enough to take at least some action.
