Sigh. Is there any good movie that isn't turned into a "franchise" which is milked until it is completely dead?

I was thinking the same thing. Ghostbusters II was stupid. And the "reboot" from 2016 was beyond dreadful, from what I've read (didn't see it).

        This looks like fun, however.

I have seen the 2016 "reboot." It's not bad enough to be dreadful, it's still fun to watch, just not as groundbreaking or as inspired as the original.

Actually, Ghostbusters 2 wasn't so bad.

I haven't seen the 2016 film; I found the whole "it's so progressive to make the cast all-female" premise so ridiculous that I couldn't be bothered to check it out.

I'm happy to check out this new version. It might very well turn out to be good; I'm just generally disappointed by the risk aversion and lack of creativity in Hollywood (which is a sentiment that is shared by many, it seems).

Probably nothing made since about 1970, but @Copper 's point stands.

I watched it, Ghostbusters Afterlife (2021).

It’s good, not necessarily “you gotta watch it in theater now” good, it’s fine if you want to wait for it to become available in one of those streaming services.

It certainly respects the original, but the target audience is definitely different. The original was made for grown-ups, this “Afterlife” installment feels more like a family movie, one that you can take your kids/grandkids to go watch together. It makes sense, if 30+ years ago you watched the original and you feel nostalgic about it, now you have something from that franchise that you can share with your young child or grand children.

The ghosts and monsters are not as scary-looking, the dialogues are not as risqué, the jokes and social commentaries are not as “adult” as the original. It’s a pretty “safe” film for young audience, and still entertaining.

Don’t expect anything groundbreaking or any profundity. Just treat it like a family movie with nostalgia that cuts across generations and you will be fine.

maybe someone somewhere is working on the screenplay of Titanic 2: Arrival in New York Harbor.
