Studios and networks have long used shady accounting practices. Same thing in the recording industry....

My son worked at the Hard Rock among other venues in N'awlins and in the casinos around Biloxi, so he knew some of the guys who were in the music scene down there.

Most of the guys had part-time jobs, or they would have starved.

Writing's the same way. When you've signed a deal with a publisher, you'll know you've arrived!*

*They'll probably try you out on eBooks before making a print commitment, and see how sales do in oh, about 10 days. You have 10 days to make a mark on their analytics and then you'll basically be dropped. Oh and you better be prepared to do an assload of social marketing on your end, that's going to be written in the agreement.

              Please love yourself.

But wouldn't such a practice shortchange the publisher, too?

Unless, what, it's a cheap ambulance chaser publisher, which floats a ton of over-the-transom stuff to mine the few good ones?

Not in the slightest. Everyone's clamoring for a book deal and they have real-time sales analytics. Publishers no longer have to risk spending time with slow burns that might pick up momentum over time; give the book a week to ten days and if it doesn't catch fire, promote the next one up and see how it does instead.

It also really helps if you're pretty. Gives people something to click on. But if you're not, an already-substantial social media presence will do nicely.

Quite obviously this prevents many kinds of great titles to ever see the light of day, but publishers aren't in the literature business, they're in the business of making money.

                    Please love yourself.
