Well - have done a few comparisons. Gardiner wins on the 9th - but early symphonies and 6th - I might take the Bruggen - better sound. We can compare next visit.

OK, but in terms of performance?

Better performance as well in the early symphonies.

@kluurs I'll never forget, when I was in college, I'd spend time at my friend's home (his name was George too, btw), and we'd go down to the basement to study (we shared some classes). We'd always put some classical music.

One day, WFMT was playing the Beethoven 1st symphony, and George started to sing along...

I learned this P&F about 15 years ago. Had I played it like this my teacher would have thrown something at me.

Have you listened to any of Jordi Savall’s Beethoven’s symphony cycle on period instruments?

              I rather liked it.

Yes!! It's excellent. I haven't listened to them in a while - maybe another set to comapre with Gardiner. I have a great deal of respect for Savall and have collected a huge number of his recordings - though i've slowed down in the age of streaming. I was delighted to get to hear him in concert just before the Pandemic hit.

Friend had this "album". Quite good I think.

I can't say that I'm sorry when I don't feel so wrong anymore
I can't tell you I'm tryin' when there's nothin' left here to try for

And I don't know how it happened
We've both abandoned the reason we used to believe
Was it love that we shared when we easily cared?
                  Now it's impossible to conceive

The first time I heard this was on a British Airlines TV ad for the Concorde, obviously at least 25 years ago.

That made me go find it.

I used to know the difference between a xylophone and a glockenspiel.

A friend of mine did reviews of the Chopin etudes and Beethoven Moonlight Sonata for Gramophone. Nice way to choose some favorite recordings to listen to.

Kind of a sad/gruesome background to this album by Allison Moorer. It talks about the tragedy when she was a teenager of when her father killed her mother and then committed suicide. But it is still very good.

                                        Lyrics
                                        [Verse 1]
The night was hot and steamy and crickets played their tune
Everyone was sleeping under an August moon
Except one man that sat awake, slowly going mad
Regretting that he'd thrown away the only love he had

                                        [Verse 2]
A slave to the bottle, he'd driven his family to leave
A wife and two daughters he treated so terribly
Drunk with grief and loneliness, he wasn't thinking straight
He knew he couldn't live unless they pardoned his mistakes

                                        [Verse 3]
He went into the city to try to make amends
Asked his love for pity but she would not give in
Overwhelmed with sadness, he reached for his gun
And took her life along with his before the morning sun

                                        [Outro]
Now they are lying in the cold, cold earth
Such a sad, sad story; such a sad, sad world
