That would be very powerful if they actually did resign and give up their jobs and accrued pensions. But they probably just stopped being part of that team.

The team disbanded itself. The former members will go back to their regular jobs, but will lose the extra pay and responsibilities. The action now leaves the city without a specially trained riot unit, amidst a shrinking police department.
