My son uses one. He likes it.

These work pretty good in a regular oven...

From what I’ve read, and air fryer is really just a compact convection oven. My oven is a convection oven, though I never use it in that mode. I wonder what Advantage this would give to me, other than being on the countertop, taking up room.

I was about to buy one a few months ago, then asked about it here, discovered it was basically a small convection oven, (we already have a larger convection oven) so didn't bother.

        I was only joking

I have a larger version of the metal net basket thingie shown in @Jolly’s post above. It’s OK in a conventional oven, better on a convection oven. “Air fry” simply means high heat with lots of airflow. Personally I think it’s a misnomer. You cannot “air fry” anything with batter (because the batter won’t “set” without oil). It’s really just “cooking with high heat and lots of airflow.” I wouldn’t equate it with deep-frying. “Air frying” also takes longer than deep-frying with oil. But clean up is much easier, and you save a lot on oil.

@george-k You're right... the air fryer is basically like convection mode, but more intense, faster cooking and a much much smaller capacity.

A good test is if you like baking french fries. How crispy / brown do you like them on the outside without burning the inside?

An air fryer will get you crispy results.

I bought a cheap, small air fryer at Costco thinking it was an experiment. We also have a convection oven - but it does a better job with some things than the convection oven (Viking). It is great for cooking things like chicken breasts, bratwurst, french fries, egg rolls, etc. They all come out better (crisper) than the regular oven.

Yeah - I tried it at my brother's house. I have a high bar for adding yet one more kitchen gadget... I think I may get one though.

I use mine pretty often. Heat up frozen dinners, cook ribs, chicken. I almost never use my regular oven anymore.

We have one. It’s not equivalent to a convection oven. The air flow is much more intense. Makes a big difference for fries. Also, easier to clean if you grill a chicken.

Even though fries turn out better than in a regular (convection) oven, they are still not nearly as good as the fatty originals (but less calories, obviously).

I’ll put ours right next to the Instapot we’ll never buy. They might be great, but I am so tired of “stuff”.

I find that my air fryer allows me to eat more and more frequently, thereby reducing the risk of starvation.

Everything I'm seeing in reviews, etc seems to indicate that an air fryer is really nothing more than a countertop convection oven. YOu're limited in the amount of food you can put in, and if you overload it, food might be unevenly cooked.

                                I'll keep researching.

Yes, that is an issue. However, the cooking speed is often faster than my eating speed, so to mitigate, I'll fill it with food while eating the previously cooked batch.

One of my go-to dishes is chicken with leeks and cream. I can take a frozen chicken breast, or two, and have it cooked, ready to shred into bite-sized pieces in 20 minutes cooking time.

                                      Chili.

Great pork chops - well done, but juicy.

Steamed veggies, corn on the cob.

                                      Pot roast.

                                      Beef stroganoff.

I've actually made lasagna in it, tho Mrs. George didn't care for the non-traditional look.
