I heard a GOP someone or other on NPR yesterday describing the thinking on Cheney. Only 10% of Republicans share her thinking, so how can you continue to have leadership from someone who is out of step with 90% of the party? The best quote was 'A leader with no followers is a guy taking a walk'.

I usually think yeah when history is written you won’t even be a footnote so settle down.

I dont know about that. It seems that more and more, the Republics are turning into a "cult of personality", rather than one party brought together by common policy. There was an article in the IHT about the lady from New York who will probably replace Rep. Cheney. She did not vote with President Trump very much, did not endorse him, and it has been only recently that she has been his puppy dog. But now that she is his puppy dog, she is the greatest Republic ever.
It seems like personality over policies wins again.
(But as @Jolly says, the Democrats would have done the exact same thing if it happened to them.)

You need to wade out in the deeper water...It's not a cult of personality. In fact, many of Trump's policies can be traced back to Goldwater. So, if you're thinking a lot of this suddenly sprang up in the Trump Administration, you're dreadfully wrong.
As for Cheney, she had her vote of conscience. But she continued to speak out, not as an individual, but as the Number 3 person in the Republican House leadership, including using the stationary of that office for opinions that were at odds with 90% (or better) of the members she was supposed to represent.
At some point, you need to shut up and do your job. I don't think Stefanik is Trump's bitch any more than you are. I do think she is more liberal than many of the members she will represent.

Rep. Stefanik, the person the GOP wants to replace Rep. Cheney with, voted less consistently with Trump on policy matters than Rep. Cheney. Stefanik even voted against Trump’s 2017 tax reform. Yet here we are, the GOP is going to replace Cheney (one who voted very consistently with Trump on policy matters) with Stefanik (one who voted less consistently with Trump on policy matters) — for one reason only: Cheney says out loud that she disagrees with Trump’s claim that the 2020 election was “stolen.” Stefanik embraces Trump’s “stolen election” narrative full throttle.
To the extent that you say only 10% of Republicans share Cheney’s thinking, that is true only if you limit the “thinking” to Trump’s “stolen election” narrative.
So the claim that the GOP is policy-driven is simply not true. By and large, they are personality driven, and that personality is Trump.
