Colorado arrest: Woman with dementia mocked by US police

US police officers are seen mocking a 73-year-old woman with dementia as they watch video of her shoulder going "pop" during her forcible arrest, according to footage released by her lawyer.

Karen Garner was detained on 26 June last year after she walked out of a Walmart store in the state of Colorado without paying for $13 (£9) of items.

Her elbow was fractured and shoulder dislocated, says her lawyer.

An investigation has been launched into the Loveland Police Department arrest.

In the footage released on Monday from the booking area of the police station on the day of the arrest, officers are seen fist-bumping one another as they review body camera video of the incident.

Video from inside Ms Garner's nearby holding cell shows the frail-looking grandmother slumped handcuffed to a bench while the officers joke about the incident, says her lawyer.

"Ready for the pop? Hear the pop?" one of the officers says at one point, referring to Ms Garner's shoulder.

As they continue to watch the footage, the same officer says: "I love it."

    I was only joking

Well, those three aren't exactly America's finest.

If that's true they should both be gone. Pronto.

The video of the arrest is pretty awful, too.

There's got to be a gentler way to deal with a somewhat confused old lady than pushing her to the floor and breaking her arm. You have to ask yourself how these people view the general public.

Agreed. Just because I support law enforcement dos not mean I support this crap.

They should also be brought up on charges of assault including a special breach of the public trust charge, if there are any laws regarding that.

And I'm certainly not one of those people that think Police = Bad. Our local cops are great - I've dealt with them a few times (in a non-criminal environment, of course!), and they work really well with the public.

But watching that video with those three giggling like juvenile delinquents over breaking an old lady's arm is just miserable, and you're left wondering about the overall police culture in that area where three officers would get together and act like that.

The biggest social image problem we have right now with the police is that everyone thinks that police officers across the country are exactly like that one cop they know, better or worse. And social media's our worst enemy here.

My cousin got his face punched in by a cop last year. ACAB.

My cousin's a state trooper. I love "the police."

                    Please love yourself.

It’s our culture now to diminish other people. The only difference is it is virtuous to mock people from the bad tribe and horrific to mock people from the good tribe.

I pretty much have come to the realization that the only purpose news serves anymore is to generate outrage and it’s boring.
