I have a friend who was trained in hand-to-hand combat and during his time in the service trained people in hand-to-hand combat. In his late 60s a guy approached him with a knife. He thought about resisting - but decided that the risk/reward wasn't in his favor.

A couple of years later, the local paper called to inform him that the guy had been killed in prison and asked him what he thought about that. "I'm delighted," was his response.

I think most sane people would regard the officer's actions as within bounds. It is tragic. There's little question of that. In hindsight, perhaps there are other things that "might" have worked; however, a split second decision was needed - and second guessing does nothing. I feel sorry for the officer and all the families involved.

The girl with the knife didn't "deserve to die," but her actions required it. And Lebron James should STFU.

If you were her - reportedly the girl who called the police to begin with, would you not stop attacking when the police pulled up? This all makes no sense at all.

Rule of Thumb: If a guy has his knife in his hand and you have your gun in the holster, you can probably kill him.

But, you WILL be cut. You might even die, if you don't block the thrust and he gets lucky.
