"Snowpiercer"

From Wikipedia: "After an attempt to stop global warming via climate engineering catastrophically backfires, creating a new ice age in 2014, the remnants of humanity have taken to a circumnavigational train, the Snowpiercer, run by reclusive transportation magnate Wilford. The passengers on the train are segregated, with the elite in the extravagant front cars and the poor in squalid tail compartments controlled by armed guards."
"Snowpiercer received critical acclaim, and appeared on many film critics' top ten lists of 2014 after its international release. Praise was primarily directed towards its vision, direction, and performances, particularly Evans's and Swinton's. Initially planned for a limited-screen showing in the United States, the critical response prompted The Weinstein Company to expand the showing to more theaters and to digital streaming services. With a budget of $40 million, it remains one of the most expensive Korean productions ever.
It's on Netflix.
I've tried, three times to watch this movie. This afternoon, I gave it a whole 45 minutes (at 1.25 speed), and gave up.
It just didn't grab me - at all.

It's also spawned a series....

No.

I really don't understand the "critical acclaim" this movie got. Great cast (Ed Harris, William Hurt, Tilda Swenson), but a ridiculous storyline and hackneyed characters.
All true but I enjoyed it for unquantifiable reasons. I can’t remember anything anymore except that I liked it.

The setting was cool. A train holding the last of civilization. The punishment of the guy having to hold his arm out the window and then get it smashed. Pretty cool. The reveal of the insects as food, not very cool. Ed Harris at the end, pretty cool.
Overall, I was ambivalent towards the movie, but it was just over the threshold of being watchable.
