Overall - good thing I think?
Excellent thing. Find a new damn way to make money other than hyperbole-porn.
wrote on 22 Mar 2021, 21:42 last edited by xenon@aqua-letifer Only thing that gives me pause is that... where else are people getting their news from?
The MSM may be going to shit, but it's probably still the "best" flavor of news - relative to the internet. (Unless you put in the time and work to strip away all the bullshit by reading multiple sources yourself)
If this means that people are consuming less news in general, that's probably good. Though, it's a bit sad that's the case.

The problem with looking at any of this is trying to define what "news" is.
Hannity? Maddow? Those are not, by any stretch "news" programs. They are opinion.
Baier does news for about 35-40 minutes a night, with a panel (admittedly right-leaning) to discuss stories. RIP Charles Krauthammer, by the way.
I'd love to see the breakdown of the opinion shows' ratings vs the news shows.

(Nodding.) When I watched TV, Jon Stewart was my go-to guy.

Y'know, I haven't been a compulsive news watcher for quite a while. And over the past few months I have become even less so as the tone and content are so freaking lame pretty much everywhere. I don't need to be depressed and everything they broadcast is depressing.
I've tended t move away from darker TV stuff in general. The news fits that category.

Way down.
CNN is apparently down 50% post-Trump.
I'm guessing Fox news is down too - but they've been losing to the likes of OAN, etc. for a while as well.
Overall - good thing I think?

FOX was down a bit, but they are bouncing back. Newsmax looked like the heir apparent, but their production values sucked. CNN is in the dumper and will remain so for awhile...Look for them to compete with PMSNBC for Screech of the Month Club.

I've had to revisit a lot of assumptions I operated on:
"More knowledge is good... read the news... learn things... know things for the sake of knowing them, etc."
I think the issue is - that generally worked in a world where content was constrained by distribution.
Now that distribution (internet) has opened the flood gate on content - average quality has gone to shit.
I've had to now learn to ignore content - which is something I never did growing up.

Absolutely.
Now, tell me about the fact that no one commented on a loud noise in the forest.
Did that tree fall?

You mean accusing everything of being a hate crime isn’t working? What will they resort to next?
