One still has to survive an interview if they can differentiate themselves from the thousands of applicants to get the interview in the first place. If the google course is the ticket word will get out.

Article on Google making a bigger splash on changing job-centric education. There’s a bit of a “puff piece” quality to this and I’m pretty sure Google has some self-serving incentives to do this, but still, making more job-relevant education available to more people at very low cost and further removing “degree” from job requirements are worthy causes by themselves. So, kudos to Google for doing this.

If someone has the drive to go through a self directed curriculum and get it done - they should be seriously considered by recruiters. (And their skills can be tested and verified)

The population that can do that without the structure of a formal school is small.

Jumping through hoops is a good skill to have in a job.

I agree. Pretty much without exception a college degree does not make you what you wish to be. It gives you the knowledge and skills to be able to learn to be that on a professional level. There is still a developmental time, even if you are getting paid.

So a degree is not "sufficient," but is it "necessary," at least for doctors? Are there medical doctors who do not have degrees?

I have heard/read about lawyers who have passed Bar exams without getting a college or university degree. I have heard/read about engineers who have managed to get licensed as engineers without first getting a college or university degree. But I have not heard or read about medical doctors who have been licensed to practice medicine without first getting a college or university degree, at least not in recent history. For those who work(ed) in the healthcare field, do you know of any exception?

I’ve tried a number of free online courses from the best institutions in America. Never got through any of them, it was too easy to fall behind.

Takes more initiative than I have.

Everyone should start with a free one, and there are multitudes. You get a better sense of what it is like. May the odds be in your favor.
