There are a few people who have been known to be absolutely awful to students in masterclasses - Schiff, Feltsman, etc. - who are downright nasty. Then there are those who ask the student questions like, "Why do you think Schumann chose this articulation for these measures," and the poor student has to guess what the teacher is thinking, and they're too much in awe to say "...'cause he thought it should be STACCATO MAYBE?? WHY ELSE???"

It's true he puts him on the spot. From the very beginning. But more like the second example Phlebas talks about, not nasty. And the kid handles it well and I think has the sympathy of the audience.
Still I learned a lot watching. And I've worked on both of these.
