They were busy:
Police response was constrained by multiple shooting incidents happening across the city, limiting the officers available to address the criminal behavior in the protest. Still, officers responded to the criminal behavior and made two arrests. Items that could be used as weapons were seized, including a large bat (photo).
Two arrests were made. Two.
Why were they busy? I wonder....
The Portland City Council has passed the 2020-21 budget 3-1, after failing to pass it last week. Included in the budget are plans to cut at least $15 million from the police bureau, eliminating 84 positions.
The council needed all four commissioners to vote yes to pass the budget last Thursday but Chloe Eudaly voted no, saying the cuts don't go deep enough. Activists were demanding a $50 million cut to the police bureau.
On Wednesday, Eudaly voted no again, and said her primary concern a week earlier had been that Portland was not reducing the overall number of police officers. She had proposed cutting many more positions within the police bureau.
But she acknowledged that this time around a unanimous vote was not necessary and the budget would pass with or without a yes from her. She also said in spite of her no vote, this is a historic moment for Portland.
"Please take a moment to celebrate this victory, and let it fuel your fire, because we're not done," she said. -
I was born and raised here, then got married and moved out of state for decades before we moved back.
As a young person, Portland was a fantastic city. We spent countless hours playing tennis at Washington Park, where there were lots of tennis courts that had lights for playing in the evening. Cruising Broadway, walking up and down Broadway with friends, let alone skiing every weekend during the winter months, camping in the Jefferson and Three Sisters wilderness areas, the Oregon coast, etc. Living in Oregon and living in Portland was a blast. We'd drink and end up in Chinatown, Hung Far Low (no kidding) was our favorite restaurant where we were so frequent patrons that the owner knew us by name. On and on, all positive reviews on my part, including playing in a rock band and jazz trio at clubs in the city as there was a very active live music scene, the young people knew the bands and followed them on a local basis. Like I said, on and on and on, a great place.
Why did they destroy it, and why is Portland leadership allowing it to be destroyed? And why are these people elected over and over. Rhetorical questions, the strong progressives are woke and proud, cancel culture reighns, everyone is somehow afraid I guess.
And did I mention our moron Governors, from Kitzhauber to Brown? No, I didn't mention it, but in some real sense, the rot starts at the top, and takes years if not decades to supplant the good with ideology to the point that arguments are not tolerated, everyone as a generalization (including several of my neighbors) kowtow to the epitome of wokeness and pretend that somehow the region is on the Right Track and given time, it will be better than ever. Sure.

That's the MSM narrative. Saw some of it with the Evil Boosh. Worked at another level for the TEA Party guys. They just took it to the next level for Orange Man and anybody who supported him or his policies.
