Why the settlement offer? What about Shaw's situation makes the college believe she has a legitimate gripe, either in the courts or online?

Hard to say,
But we need cases like this. It the medium term, it will be courts not culture that put the breaks on illiberal wokeism.
As much as we cringe at wokeisms excesses, such overreaching is probably on the critical path to curbing it.
