(so as not to derail the semi-official Super Bowl thread)

I tuned in about half an hour ago.

I've not watched pro football for at least a decade, and I must admit, the camera work is just amazing.

Oh, brave, new, world that has such cameras in it!

A few years ago, Sunday Night Football had a camera malfunction and for sections of the game, the only view they could broadcast was from behind the QB and elevated slightly, giving you a full view of the play from the QB’s eyes...blocking schemes, receiver routes, plays developing against zone coverages. It was amazing. So good that they decided to try it for another game. Everybody bitched though, because they couldn’t get a good feel on how many yards a play went for at that angle. It was a real shame. I would prefer to watch a full game from that angle than the traditional....

@lufins-dad Where the technology is going is to give you 3D reconstruction of the game so you can pan and zoom and watch from any angle and multiple angles at the same time. TV as we know it is not going to cut it, you will need some "app" to watch it the fancy way. I think folks already figured out the math to do the 3D reconstruction from multiple cameras, but the computational power is not quite there yet to do the 3D reconstruction in real time and the bandwidth is also not there yet to deliver the reconstructed 3D data to most people.

@axtremus There are hundreds of cameras that are set up strictly for NFL and team use that aren’t allowed for broadcast, strictly film study for teams and archival projects for the league. These cameras capture every single player and matchup on the field from every conceivable angle.

Over the past five years, teams have been able to compile all of the films to create a VR replay of each and every play in the game. Drew Brees was known to spend an entire day every week going into VR and analyzing every offensive passing play from that most recent week, taking it frame by frame to see exactly where the receivers broke open, where he could have placed the ball better, how the defenders responded in various zone schemes, etc... that is a tool that I would love to olay around with...

The view from the stands is certainly not the view from the field.

Can you imagine what Brees or Wilson has to look through, to try to see if a receiver is open?
