Hero Or Snitch?

I think that "hero" may be too strong a word for what he did, but he is definitely not a "snitch".
I would hope that if I saw someone I knew doing something illegal (on a major scale, not just jaywalking or something like that), I would like to think that I would do the right thing and report them.

You are blaming the harm and ruin on the wrong person. It’s Guy Reffitt the father who inflicted the harm and ruin, not Jackson Reffitt the son. And Guy Reffitt inflicted all that harm and ruin on his family as he inflicted harm also on the nation.
I don’t know whether Jackson Reffitt has any student loan, but I also cannot go along with you suggesting that a person should harbor a fugitive out of consideration for his own financial benefits (e.g., such as expecting that fugitive to pay off his loan).

No crime had been committed when he called and his call prevented nothing. So yeah, he should not have done it. A 16 year old's judgement, or lack thereof, is not sufficient to bring the feds down on your family.

This depends on a couple of things.
First - do you view the insurrection of idiots as a crime against the country (I did).
Second you have to take in consideration your values: morality, family, country.
I value family > than country. (In most situations)
Morality is the tough one. I can see people drawing the lines in different places here. The crime has to be pretty bad before I think the federal penitentiary system is warranted for a loved one.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the kid had very different politics than the dad.

Possibly. However there is this:
Jackson Reffitt informed authorities that, on the night of Jan. 8 and the ensuing days, his father told him and other family members that he was among the individuals who "stormed the Capitol" on Jan. 6, that he went to protect the country and brought his gun with him, and that he recorded some of the events on his GoPro camera, which was strapped to his helmet, according to the court documents.
Maybe not a crime in itself, but arming yourself and storming the Capitol is not exactly lawful now, is it?

The father fucked up his one job, which is to produce offspring that could learn the appropriate ways to function in society. Good thing the son recognized it and did what he had to do no matter the short term harm to the family.
I detest snitches. The kid was just expressing normal instincts and likely tortured himself in coming to the conclusion he did.

You don't turn family in. Not unless there is a murder or rape, or perhaps another crime as serious that harmed another person. What his father did, doe not even come close.
In my world, the family would close ranks and the little bitch would be considered dead. His clothes would be sitting on the street and he could make his way in life as he saw fit.
