We are a vindictive country.
When its symbols are attacked. That's why far more outrage over this than the BLM fires. That's why the heavy response after 9/11. We go full rage mode when our symbols are attacked.
You don't think the BLM riots attacked our symbols?
Why so few people were outraged, let alone cared, about entire businesses being burned to the ground, is because in the eyes of most Americans, no, no they didn't.
The Capitol the most obvious American symbol there is, and they were conducting a vote inside. That's going to hit home a lot harder than ten Papa John's getting torched.
I'm not placing a value judgment on that, I'm just saying that that's obviously how most people see it.
This. I agree 100%. It gets back to some of the other foreign threads. Not all crimes are equal, even if on the surface they are. Right or wrong, some crimes are more equal than others
Agree but you called them both crimes and I don’t think that was what was communicated on the BLM protests.

No, it was more like people didn't care (out loud) because of skin color
Part of the way you can tell that people care is the invasion last Wednesday.

I don't know people who went in fear of expressing outrage. There were plenty of people here in the liberal stronghold of Massachusetts who said they didn't approve. I imagine some of the language used in Arkansas and Alabama, for example, may have been even stronger.
-
I'm not going to lose my job if I say the New England Patriots are a bunch of cheaters.
Bill Belichick might.

Put it this way, there was plenty of outrage being expressed by the people I work with.
They didn't phone up random black people and say it. Like anything controversial, you had to be a bit careful of who you spoke to.
I once upset a big group of colleagues in Boston who it turns out are devout Roman Catholics when I made an ill-considered remark about the morning-after pill.
-
Not sure about the racism. I haven't heard much of that around here. However, they sure didn't like my remarks about the morning after pill.
Left-footers, one and all.

Trump resigned from the Trump organization in 2016. NYC is canceling contracts because of alleged criminal activity from an ex-employee? Or are they alleging that Eric or Donald Jr. are guilty of criminal behavior?
I'd love to be a Trump attorney for this case...

They knew they did this it would not survive contact with reality.

Donald J. Trump is still the sole and principal owner of the Trump Organization. You should know better than to equate a principal owner to an ex-employee.

Elijah "Pumpsie" Green was the first black player on the Boston Red Sox, the last Major League Baseball team to integrate.
I remember Pumpsie Green as a second baseman, I was 5 years-old. I don't remember anything about him and integration.
Bill Russell played for the Celtics 56-69, He won 11 NBA championships (really 11), 8 of them in a row. He always talked about Boston being racist. It probably was, but at that time he would have heard the talk anywhere.
The school bussing in the 70's insured Boston's reputation.
Bussing was bad for everyone, it still is. I had a front row seat for it. It was just plain stupid.
Is Boston racist? Maybe, but it isn't just white/black, it's different. The Irish are very aware that they are Irish, that is also true for Italians, Germans, Jewish, Brahmin, Limey or whatever. The city was always run by democrats who didn't used to be far left. But now they have become woke.

We’re you one of the kids bussed to a school far away?
No, my father was a high school headmaster in Boston. He was making Walter Cronkite appearances at the time to discuss the bussing.
He sent his kids to private schools, of course. They were cheap back then. I think $100 covered 6 of us in the same grammar school. We had nuns who worked for food and shelter.
-
Would bussing work today with the wokes? Feels like a true test.
Peer quality is strongly linked to outcomes. You take poor disadvantaged kids and start sending them to areas with high property values (and high property values because of schools), let's see how people react?
I for one unabashedly traded less house for better school district. I'm sure many others have as well.
