Gerry and the Pacemakers star Gerry Marsden, whose Sixties hits include “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, “Ferry Cross The Mersey” and “I Like It”, has died aged 78.
Broadcaster Pete Price announced the news on social media with a loving tribute to his friend, who died after tests showed he had a blood infection in his heart.
A statement issued by Marsden’s family said: “Gerry died earlier today after a short illness in no way connected with Covid-19. His wife, daughters and grandchildren are devastated.”

The song 'Ferry Cross the Mersey' is played on the boat every single time they make the crossing. When I lived in Chester, UK, we often used to take it from Birkenhead to Liverpool. The memory of standing in the freezing cold listening to it on tinny little speakers is not altogether an unpleasant one.
The sound of Liverpool fans singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone' is really something else.
