I meant an invasive species that takes over and is hard to kill.

Yeah, I got that. I just liked the "pest" reference.

Star Wars, like Syd Barrett, is exceptionally good at wearing out its welcome with random precision.

4 BILLION DOLLARS... That's a number four followed by 9 zeroes... $4,000,000,000. That isn't how much money they've made, that's how much they spent to buy it. Add on another $1,000,000,000 to film the damn things and another $500,000,000 to market them. So far they've made back about $5,000,000,000 but do you think they are going to stop before hitting $20,000,000,000? I don't...
And frankly, Rogue 1 was probably the best Star Wars movie made, Solo was excellent, and The Mandalorian has been a lot of fun. The sequel trilogy almost killed them, but they have found their footing and are making a lot of money while making a lot of people very happy. Nothing wrong with that. It's not art, it's not cinema, it's a lot of fan service, but so what?

Personally, I'd rather they'd stop making rom-coms than Star Wars.

Yep. But there are things more important than money.
That's one great thing about the hardcore nerd audience: they brook no bullshit when it comes to their "entertainment." They're just as much a part of the creative process as the creators. When the creators screw up their favorite narratives, they damn well make it known and vote with their wallets.

I'd say look around. It's one of the most lucrative industries out there. They're still total geeks but they're certainly living comfortably.
