Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Robert Redfield issued a stark warning about the worsening death toll from the coronavirus on Thursday, saying that in a coming brutal stretch of time the country is likely to see more deaths from the virus each day than from the Sept. 11 attacks or Pearl Harbor.“We are in the timeframe now that probably for the next 60 to 90 days we're going to have more deaths per day than we had at 9/11 or we had at Pearl Harbor,” Redfield said during an event hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations.

We hit 3k on Wednesday I think.

80% of those deaths are over age 65. Our inability to protect them is the national tragedy.
The average age of the 9/11 victim was 40.
20% of 3,000 is 600. Do we not count those because they're outliers?
-
The death count is over 500/day in the UK. About 495 of those will be over 50 years old.
Everyone's out shopping with useless homemade masks
Schoolchildren will be bringing the virus home, often asymptomatically, and it then goes through family generations unless they're very very careful.

Of course we count them. How we protect long term care facilities has been my mantra from day 1. You go to where the biggest problem is if you want to inflect.

300k deaths now. More than 3k today.

I find the analogy to 9/11 to be highly inappropriate and frankly offensive.
There is a world and a half of difference between a natural disaster/act of God/pandemic and an act of premeditated murder and terror.
-
President Trump has openly theorised Covid might have been created in a Wuhan lab and they made a mistake. He's said that the Chinese initially covered up the virus, that they stopped people travelling within their country but allowed international travel from Wuhan. He said the Chinese wanted to stop him winning the election.
The Chinese apparently clamped down in Wuhan with a knowing and ruthless efficiency, while letting Covid spread by air travel and leaving the free world to cope with chaos. Did they have a plan? Did they simply take advantage? Was it an act of premeditated terror?
I wonder what Trump thinks now

When people compare deaths to 9/11 or Antietam or Vietnam whatever it’s just putting the numbers in context. It’s not really comparing any other aspect of the events.
-
2500 people die in the US every single day due to Heart Disease. I’ve not heard a thing about comparing those two numbers, even though the context would be much closer...I’ve never once heard someone say “Three 9/11s every weak due to CBD” so why do it with this disease?
It’s not context, it’s narrative. And that’s part of the reason it’s offensive.
Hell, the heart disease number is actually kind of worse because it is a disease that is more preventable. Stop eating so many Big Macs, lose 30 pounds or so, and see the difference...

And the nuclear bomb almost took out the world and WW2 took out a generation of men. The toll on life this pandemic has taken should be put in historical reference not the cherry picking for effect that goes on. And these are people good at math doing it.

I don't know if the virus was created with CRISPR technology or not. Some geneticists have said no, but there is a lot of Chinese money floating around in the research world. I do know a couple of things...
- AFAIK, the virus has never been found in the wild in its supposed host.
- The virus originated in Wuhan, where the Chinese have their bioweapons lab and where their best geneticist worked.
I also know a couple of other things...
- The Chinese tried their best to contain the virus in their Wuhan. Except...
- They didn't give a fig if it spread through international travel.
I don't know if the Chinese allowed this to spread to hurt Trump. I have a suspicion they didn't mind the virus effecting other economies and giving them economic advantage. I also think the Chinese are quite happy to see Biden on the horizon. Chinese business is ruthless, unscrupulous and plays to win at almost any cost.

I assume that number will go way down.
The heart disease lobby isn't going to like covid stealing it's victims.

@LuFins-Dad, off the tops of their heads, most Americans have no idea how many lives were lost to the Spanish Flu, the Hong Kong Flu, the Red Plague, heart diseases, traffic accidents, etc. Most of the younger generation also do not know the number of fatalities for Pearl Harbor. 9/11 is the most widely known common frame of reference at this time in the American psyche, hence 9/11 is used as the baseline for comparison.

Are you saying heart disease is a better comparison?
COVID deaths are unique in that unlike heart disease, drowning, getting hit by a bus, etc, etc, it's the only cause of death that (1) is mostly preventable (2) doesn't take years of work to prevent and (3) exhibits exponential growth. In those respects it's absolutely nothing like heart disease at all.

Thanks for making my later point for me.

The fact that most Americans have no sense of the scale of the Hong Kong Flu proves my point about the magnitude comparison...
