We’ve really failed the nursing home patients

Very susceptible patient population.
Not to mention the quality of staff or the fact that nursing home staff will often work multiple nursing homes, because of hours and pay.

I'm really worried about by mum. She went into a nursing home right before Covid struck with her broken hip. They locked down before the rest of the country, but it's clearly not a good place to be.

20% sounds low. Once you get to the nursing home it get so much higher because these people are generally dying and COVID may truly be the cause but in reality maybe advanced it by a couple of months.
The problem with assisted living is you have to figure out how to keep the workers from bringing it in and these workers are not well paid and the turnover can approach 50%

MIL has been in an assisted living facility since mid to late January. They have been on lockdown since the beginning of March. No reported cases in her facility, so we are optimistic.

Same here, except she's been in for about three years so far.

Same here, except about a year now.
They had one case and got them right out of the building and isolated.

I can see why one might think we have let them down, but what were the alternatives?
If you’re going to lock them in to the point of excluding any and all visitors, then they needed to ensure that they were locking the virus out, not locking them in. Much heavier screening of staff, and patients, and once staff was screened, they should have maintained a quarantine for that staff.

With a virus that can spread asymtomatically? How were they to do that? Do you know they did not take the steps they could? Simply not possible to quarantine staff.
