At the end of Season 3, the gates are opened.
Season 4 is the beginning of the story of the consequences of mankind discovering thousands of new worlds. So many of the social and economic structures we have based everything on are upended.

||Looking forward to books beyond that depicted in season 4, Mars becomes irrelevant. Why bother terraforming Mars, when there are thousands of planets we can go to without the expense? Mars, or at least a faction of Mars, gets pissed.
The fourth book, "Cibola Burn", is a placeholder, in the sense it sets up things that follow. Horrible, horrible things happen to Earth. A new power arises, threatening alliances.||
Watch Season 4 and, if you're still intrigued, read book 4.
My plan is to re-read book 5 and then watch the 5th season.

I think I stopped at the end of Season 3 because it felt a bit like the story was done, and I didn't want to end up in the situation I found myself with the last season of Babylon 5, which was a right old mess.

Indeed. It was the end of the first act.
Season 4 is a whole new thing.
Highlight is Chrisjen Avasrala complaining to Holden that all these people are "waving their dicks at each other."
We see new sides of Amos ("I'm free") and a wonderful new villain (Burn Gorman). The mystery of the protomolecule gets more complicated, and..."Miller" returns - sort of.
Season 4 really is a "tee-up" to the rest of the story.
||Remember in Season 1 when Avasarala said something about people "dropping rocks?" Well, yeah.||

I suppose, but the storyline was laid down years and years ago. Nemesis Games (book 5) was published in 2015. The authors have always known the direction of the arc, including how it all ends (book 9 coming out next year).
I hope it will be better, though.

I just took the plunge. S1 E1 and 2. I’m in the grasp.
I found it really difficult to get into, even after the first 2 episodes of Season 1. Then, with season 3, BOOM! It all made sense.
What I like about it is that the authors have said that they know how the story will end, and how it's going to go. No doubt there are differences between the books (there are 8, with one more to come) and the series, but the series is following the books pretty closely. Season 5, coming in December will parallel the 5th book.
There's TONS of geeky Expanse stuff on the web, especially YouTube. What everyone loves is the approach to hard science: no FTL travel, no artificial gravity, the only concession that they've made so far is the "Epstein Drive" - a remarkably efficient drive that can sustain acceleration for a long time with minimal use of propellant. With a 1g acceleration, it's possible to get from one planet to another in a matter of days, rather than months (look it up!).
