But you still won’t really get it.I've tried to read Hawking's "Brief History of Time" at least three times. I've either given up or lost all comprehension about halfway through, each time.

Well, on the bright side, you can definitely get all the way through Carroll’s tweet thread.
I read it twice. The tweet thread, that is.

getting through ≠ comprehension
I "got through" BHoT" twice.
And comprehension ≠ owning
Tiger Woods says
"Only two players have ever truly owned their swings: Moe Norman and Ben Hogan."
Tiger says even he doesn't own it, there is still that little bit of mystery.
Black holes, for the moment, are like that.
And don't forget the problem with racism.

I can't find the story now (and I've looked). Apparently when the term "black hole" was proposed, there were some French (iirc) scientists who objected to the name because it had, well, objectionable connotations (fucking snowflakes, even then). They suggested "Dark Star" would be a less tasteless name (though, in today's climate, that might be offensive too!).
They didn't prevail.

You got further along than I did; about a third of the way for me. Then I dipped into the thing he co-wrote with I forget his name, supposedly a clarification of BHoT, and didn't do much better. So I said to heck with it, there are things ordinary brains are not meant to grasp. I'm okay with that.

Long Twitter threads + threadreader + Pocket + eReader with Pocket integration = the move.
