Netflix apologized for the poster. I had an instant revulsion to it as well. Child beauty pageants and the like have always struck me as repulsive, and I’m surprised they exist.

Now - after I did a few mins of google searching it seems like the movie is critical of sexualizing children as well.

I dunno if I’d agree, I haven’t seen the movie.

Nor have I. However, that picture from the movie seems, as Jon pointed out, to titillate rather than to make a point.

It sounds weird, Netflix claims that it’s meant to shed light and criticize the practice, but a lot of people seem to think they glorified it.

Light can be shined on the problem of pedophilia and sex trafficking without dressing a bunch of 13 year old kids up like 20 year old whores.

Any man who would sit and watch a movie with a bunch of little girls dressed up like that and acting like that is doing so because he's getting off on it. The son of a bitch needs to die.

Sex trafficking and pedophilia are rampant. There's even a new push to have pedophilia accepted as a legitimate sexual preference. You can straddle the fence on most issues, that's fine - but on this one you need to pick which side you're on. If you don't believe it's a problem Google the sex offender registry in your local area. You are surrounded by them.

I have seen a trailer for the movie. It is straight up kiddie porn with a bikini on.

Apparently tech companies reported 45M child porn pics to authorities last year, which was double the year before. (And about 100k in 2008)

Law enforcement has nowhere near the resources or legal tools to deal with this.

There are a couple of bills in the works to get the FBI more resources, but the crux of the issue is encryption.

The current DOJ is not very encryption friendly. I would hate for the government to have a legal backdoor into all electronic communications.

But child porn is already a massive epidemic and very readily available.

@xenon I agree. If you want a true but skin crawl podcast, listen to "Hunting Warhead", about the taking down of one of the largest such sites on the internet (dark web). Disgusting work those guys had to do to break into and take it down.

I saw another clip from this movie yesterday. The scene was an adult white male arguing with a little black girl wearing a short shorts and a cut off T shirt. Apparently the man was up to nothing wrong, just trying to get her to not do something she wanted to do but shouldnt, she got mad and decided to do something that would get him in trouble. She grabbed his cell phone from him, then ran into the bathroom and locked the door. She then proceeded to pull her shorts down, squat in the floor, and stick the phone between her legs and take a picture of her hoohah. Then she opened the door and threw his phone at him.

It doesn't actually show her nether regions, but yeah, that's the scene as I've heard it described.

I disagree with canceling this show.

It's the right wing version of cancel culture.

It's also hypocritical given that nobody complains about these disturbing beauty contests for kids, which are just as sexualized.

My understanding of "cancel culture" is that it is based on what one considers a politically incorrect idea. This seems to be outrage over the sexualization of young girls. Would you agree that there's a difference between those?

All this stuff gives me the creeps. Middle school and HS cheerleaders, beauty pageants for kids, the whole lot.

Apart from anything else, it sends a pretty miserable message to girls about their role in the world.

The difference, as far as I see it, is merely that "politically incorrect" is replaced by a different "trigger", in this case titillating depiction of minors (from what I hear - haven't seen the trailer or anything).

Are we going to ban "Lolita" and the movies based on it, too?

Netflix shouldn't have removed "Gone with the wind". It shouldn't remove "Cuties" either. All the book burning and person/institution canceling leads to a dark place, regardless of whether it's "left-wing" or "right-wing". The only proper position, in my opinion, is that everything that's legal is fair game, and any bans/cancelllation/... should be restricted to the most extreme cases.

I would have thought it quite likely that having the movie on Netflix would cause more backlash against these dreadful events, but I haven't seen it.

My understanding of "cancel culture" is that it is based on what one considers a politically incorrect idea. This seems to be outrage over the sexualization of young girls. Would you agree that there's a difference between those?

                                        I agree.

(haven't seen the film, so I can't comment on whether it's extreme or not)

Would you consider Larry's description of the telephone incident "extreme?"

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

I would have thought it quite likely that having the movie on Netflix would cause more backlash against these dreadful events, but I haven't seen it.

Yet. If it does that might be a good thing.
