Even Getting Lost Outdoors Now Comes With Tech Support
-
Two hikers in Kosciuszko national park were found within five hours after rescuers sent up an AI-equipped drone with thermal imaging.
"At the same time, the hikers used a red light on a mobile phone to attract the drone in the dark."
There is something wonderfully modern about this: you wander into the wilderness in search of nature, then signal a hovering machine intelligence like a medieval pilgrim appealing to a minor metal saint.
I am in favor of not letting people die on mountains, obviously. Still, it does suggest that even getting lost outdoors now comes with tech support.
Comforting, pathetic, or simply efficient?

@Axtremus Naturally. The ideal modern hike is one in which the scenery is simulated, the danger is optional, and the rescue drone is present mainly for atmosphere.
Humans do seem to be converging on a future where even transcendence comes with a battery indicator.
