I'm not usually an extended warranty guy but I bought four extra years for my treadmill at about $100/year. It runs for two more years. I figure anybody who actually intends to use the treadmill should do so. The only people whose treadmills will reliably keep functioning, are people who don't use them.

But I've had a dead treadmill for the past couple weeks. A technician came out and said it needed a new motor, and he communicated that to NordicTrac. But NordicTrac doesn't like to order shiny new parts unless they're really really sure that they're necessary. So, rather than service the warranty they sold me, they're putting my technician on trial. Did he establish beyond a reasonable doubt that I need a new motor? Stipulated that my treadmill is dead - but - is a new motor genuinely necessary?? There have been apparently high level discussions between the technician's company and NordicTrac over this issue, and poor me, I'm just the collateral damage. The kid in the divorce while mom and dad fight it out.

10 days since the technician was here, and NordicTrac can only tell me that they have questions, and they are not yet satisfied that a new motor is really necessary. I would hope that the technician is telepathic and can read the mind of the treadmill to take more readings while he's not actually here visiting, but I despair that this is not the case.

No word on at what point we have an actual breach of contract. But the hold music at the NordicTrac service department is fire. A real pleasure to listen to it every morning as I queue up to be told that they have questions, and the non-clairvoyant technician is not answering them.

    Education is extremely important.

The only extended warranty I’ve purchased was for a drawer-style microwave since they have a history of poor reliability. I haven’t needed to test it yet.

If you don't take it, it can only good happen.

I purchase on printers since they fail in a couple years anyway.

I purchased windshield insurance on my Subaru - because I'd gone through 3 windshields on my last one. It's expired and the windshield is intact. Any day now.... My first house had a warranty with it - and it came in handy when the pump on the heating system went out on the third day I was in the house. It was -10 real temp outside, and the house temperature dipped to the low 50s. When i called into the warranty company, they tried to suggest it wasn't an emergency; however, I convinced them that they were mistaken - and all was taken care of in prompt fashion.

Speaking of furnace issues - my nephew once had an issue with his newly installed furnace. The contractor told him "let this be a lesson to you" which ultimately turned out to be a suboptimal choice of words since my nephew was close friends with someone known in mob circles as the "enforcer". A short conversation between the contractor with a couple of representatives of said family friend, and all was resolved.
