100k Fee on H1-B visas
-
85,000 may be issued per year, each lasting at most 6 years ...
85,000 x 6 x $100,000 = $51 Billion per year maximum.
This will so screw up the business models for the likes of Infosys and Wipro.
In the high tech sector, American companies may just build more "research centers" in India. It's not that they haven't done quite a bit of that already.
As per the federal data, here is a list of top 10 companies that sponsor the highest number of H1-B visas:
Amazon Com Services LLC- 10,044 H1-B visa holders
Tata Consultancy Services LLC- 5,505
Microsoft Corporation- 5,189
Meta Platforms- 5123
Apple Inc- 4,202
Google LLC - 4,181
Cognizant Technology Solution - 2,493
JP Morgan Chase and Co - 2,440
Walmart Associates Inc - 2,390
Deloitte Consulting LLP - 2353 -
I am sure that the companies are looking at the numbers.
They would say something like:
"Before, we paid $X for a H1-B visa, but the guy we hired, we could pay $Y less than a US worker, so it was worth it. Now, maybe it will be more economical to hire a US worker."The "wild card" is if they can find that US worker to fill the job.
Or, as Ax says, move the job overseas.

workaround
An L-1 visa allows companies with an international presence to transfer managers, executives, and specialized knowledge workers from a foreign branch or affiliate to the United States, if the transferring employee worked for the related entity abroad for at least one year in the last three years.so if you work for say microsoft india, microsoft can move you to the USA, did i get that right?

Even they can, it’s cheaper for them to keep the employee who is already in India in India.
FWIW, Microsoft already has ≥ 20k employees in India. -

Couple of interesting articles:
Microsoft on Saturday advised its H-1B and H-4 visa employees to return to the United States immediately, ahead of the September 21 deadline announced by President Donald Trump after he imposed a $100,000 annual fee on the program, according to an internal email seen by Reuters.
The world's second largest tech firm further advised its H-1B visa employees that are currently already in the US to continue working in the country for the "foreseeable future".
"H-1B visa holders should stay in the US for the foreseeable future. Also recommend H-4 visa holders remain in the US. Strongly recommend H-1B and H-4 visa holders return to the US tomorrow before the deadline," parts of the email viewed by the news agency read.
and another story
In a sign of how panic gripped many H-1B visa holders or applicants across the United States, several Indian passengers disembarked from planes mid-boarding following US President Donald Trump's announcement regarding a huge hike in the visa fee, social media posts showed.
Trump signed a proclamation imposing $100,000 per year fee on H‑1B visa petitions, which could mean the end of the programme for new applicants.
