I thought at the time the west made a huge mistake by trying to hem Russia in rather than bring them in much as we did Germany after the war. It seems we tried to rub their nose in the collapse at every turn. I think Bush the elder was the only one that saw that.

Yes and No. Sure the West was patronizing but the Russians themselves always demanded special treatment from the West. Business with Russia was almost always a one way street on which to their thinking must be to their advantage for no other reason than the power and moral superiority of the Russian culture.
Western businesses lost billions in the casino called Russia.
