From what I've read I have little doubt that he died in the fall or soon thereafter. Still an interesting mystery as to who he was, though.

Yeah and "Copper" just happens to have an intimate knowledge of planes and has logged like a bajillion hours in the cockpit. Also just so happens our friend "Cooper" was never found.

He didn't! That's one of the weird things about the story: he was a nice guy to everyone.
