    • Ran a successful education day in Phoenix, ~100 attendees.

    • Got majority board support for a big project we’re embarking upon focused on disease detection (a real problem for us with ~90% undiagnosed). Probably will get unanimity in another meeting Wednesday for those who couldn’t attend last week.

    • Took a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon. (Fuck Elon, I’m retired).

    • Visited Phoenix and Flagstaff for the first time (see previous point)

    • sent in an I-134 to sponsor Mayla’s parents for a visa (just to be able to come visit, not a chain migration thing). My lawyer gives it a ~50% chance of approval.

    You were warned.

Tell me more about your project. It clearly involves genetic testing.

Just came out of a staff meeting and my supervisor informed us to reply as requested before the clock strikes midnight tonight, Eastern time of course. All times are Eastern when dealing with federal government.

one wonders how many federal employees it will take to decipher 2 million plus emails of tasks performed.

Is that a .gov email address you are expected to reply to?

I think it will be AI scanning the responses rather than humans reading them.

I also fixed a door and its strikeplate problem for a daughter in London.
What could have been a straightforward 5 minute job as usual blossomed:

Sliding door is for an outside cupboard(!) but under cover behind parking spaces.
                      There are five, one for each flat, only one original door working, one changed with hinges and hasp padlock;
anyway daughter had found a workman changing clothes inside her cupboard so...

Vintage clawbolt lock from 1973, keys lost by previous owners. I bought an exact 3 lever replacement for £50, nevertheless happy day.

Cleaned the wheels and runner with wd40. Smooth.
Fitted new expanding clawbolt lock easily.

                      And then what I'd expected,
a pretty stunning misalignment due to the frame having been bumped by a car.
                      "Got any tools?"

Had to chisel out (blunt vintage & using an antique club hammer) the wooden frame to fit strike plate half an inch higher; file (mini craft set) the inner rectangular hole of the strike plate to widen the tolerance for the expanding lock; and saw (junior hacksaw) the old metal strike plate and use the two parts to raise the new brass one from the frame.

Two and a half hours of expert improvisations (faffing about 😆)

                                    1. Went record hunting with the family around Fells Point. Got some great stuff.
                                    2. Taught kiddo how to work a record. (She did all the steps this time around.)
                                    3. Got Mexican with a family who had the kiddo over for her first sleepover. Success. But our friends were worn out. (Our daughter has no setting between "off" and "high." None.)
                                    4. Read Hiawatha and a couple Iain McGilchrist articles.
                                    5. Spoke to my folks on FaceTime so they could say hi to the grandkid.
                                    6. Wrote a poem in dróttkvætt. Did a couple blackout ones just for fun.
                                    7. Did some birding out by a nearby nature sanctuary.
                                    8. Hosted another writing seminar.

                                    Please love yourself.

I will confirm this assessment, but she is still wonderful. And I mean that literally. The girl is full of wonder.

Thanks, man, that's very kind of you to say!

We really lucked out in a lot of ways. She's the kind of kid that just makes people smile. Which, thank God for that.

                                        Please love yourself.

There’s nature and nurture in that. She’s a wonderful girl, and her parents have helped nurture that…
