One of the studies shared by MNPS said metal detectors disproportionately target students of color, too — a detail that other studies over the years have focused on, with findings suggesting that instills a sense of fear for minority students.
Seems like another way of saying students of color have a higher likelihood of bringing guns to school.

Brings up a question, though... What level of security should schools have?

I'm comfortable leaving that question to the students and their parents. I can imagine they like metal detectors.

A ridiculous concept that a device can be racist.

one of a thousand different ways where unequal behaviors, attitudes, and cultures of humans is framed as racism. Because the more direct and obvious explanation is disallowed.

They are obviously sexist, too. Nobody ever brings that up…

A lot of city schools have them. Nobody would think of it here, 7 miles north.

Metal detectors at schools sound absurd to me.
It would be a reason for me to move elsewhere. I don't want to live in a place where this is necessary.

I agree and had we stayed in the city he’d have gone private.

In the city? Metal detectors + armed law enforcement.

Sad that it has come to this.

My father was a high school headmaster in Boston in the 70s.
He had metal detectors in his school.
And I remember a couple big boxes in our basement full of knives. The detectors worked.
