LASIK
-
Here's what's going on:
A very sharp knife slices the epithelium off the cornea. It's not completely removed, a flap is raised. The epithelium is the thin, outermost layer. Frequently only a few cells thick.
Then, using the patient's pre-op examination data, a laser shines on the cornea, reshaping it to correct any errors in refraction.
Then, the epithelial corral flap is repositioned over the reshaped cornea and you're done.
You should know that LASIK is a refinement of a procedure called PRK - Photorefractive Keratectomy. In this procedure, a series of radial "cuts" are made in the cornea effectively reshaping it. There is no flap.
Mrs. George had this done because LASIK was unavailable at the time.
If you've ever had a cornal abrasion, you know that it hurts like a MoFo. Now, imagine a couple dozen similar abrasions in a radial fashion around the pupil.

Yeah, she hated glasses. After years of contact lenses, she became dificult to fit for lenses (I don't know why). Opthamologist recommended PRK.
Hurt like a sonofabitch for about a week. But, years later, she's happy she had it done.

That’s how I feel about my penile implants. Both of them.

Shape of the cornea. Some people are extremely hard to fit
