Speaking of inappropriate language, in our office in Rhode Island I'm treated to this sight every time I open the fridge. As a Brit, it's a little hard not to smirk....

OK, as long as we're talking inappropriate, let me tell you about the LMA - the Laryngeal Mask Airway.
It is a device used instead of an endotracheal tube. It came into use in the mid-late 1990s, and was totally transformative in anesthesia. The ability to blindly insert this device when you wanted to maintain an airway, but didn't want to intubate the patient, or need to intubate, was fantastic. For example, if total knee replacement took 2 hours, the only reason to intubate would be to avoid holding a facemask for two hours. With the LMA, you could avoid hand-cramping numbness of the left hand.
Here's an LMA - early version, because there have been many improvements over the decades.
I was subscribed to an anesthesia-related listserve back in the day. One of the anesthesiologists from Australia called it a "Fanny on a stick."
Of course, none of us here in the States would be so crass.

Growing up, the most popular toothpaste in Taiwan was called "Darkie". I think in the mid 1990's they changed the name.
But you have to understand, it was not meant to be racist. Most people in Taiwan had never see a black person before.
