Trade imbalance with Canada

Saturday night we were at a party at the house of a Canadian career NATO guy (it was his Peruvian wife’s birthday).
He was talking about Trump’s view of trade balances as a score card and made a point that hadn’t occurred to me, but seemed obvious once he said it:
Two geographically large countries rich with natural resources (by far their largest export category). Is it really surprising that 350MM Americans buy more of Canada’s resources than 40MM Canadians manage to buy from America?
