What a verbose way to announce his plan to rename US Customs and Border Protection.

I can only assume Trump knows the US collects tariffs and duties directly from the US based importer and then only after the goods have crossed the border into the USA. Perhaps though I am wrong in this thinking and Trump really is that stupid to think he can directly tax foreign businesses/manufacturers, such as Bosendorfer in Austria, that supply US based importers.

Sometimes you wonder if he’s stupid enough to believe what he says. I’m inclined to to say yes, if only because tariffs are probably the only policy idea he’s been consistent about for decades.

          You were warned.

Did you hear Kevin O'Leary on Gutfeld! last night? I think he summed Trump's pronouncement up pretty well.

            1. Look at everything like the beginning negotiations of a real estate deal. The first statement is always going to be something like, " My God, there are rats in this building! It's going to take a fortune to fix this! Surely, you'll come down on your asking price? What will you take for it?"

            2. Try to separate the signal from the noise. When you decipher the signal, you've got what Trump is actually trying to do.

It might come as a painful shock to Trump when he discovers the world is not trying to sell the US consumer an overpriced and rat infested piece of real estate. Likewise the importation of goods and services at market value does not amount to what Trump refers to as a subsidy. Does he honestly believe that a US distributor/dealer of Bosendorfer pianos is subsidising Austria?

Contrary to the twisted understanding of Kevin O’Leary, Canada’s leading corporate Trump groupie and obnoxious blowhard, there’s not much of anything behind Trump’s unwarranted noise on this subject other than ignorance and stupidity.

                  Now, let’s talk practical effects….

So a $200K Bosendorfer just became $220K. (Not really, since the tariffs are on wholesale, and not to give away our deep dark secrets, but wholesale is less than retail bet a significant amount). But… Will $20K make the Bosendorfer customer to go Steinway instead? I doubt it.

Those $150 Nike’s just became $165. A few Toyotas just went from$40K to $44K. I honestly don’t see much of a change in spending habits.

So we still pay the tax but it doesn’t help the domestic companies?

I do think at the margin it makes a difference and a 10% tariff will translate to more than 10% at the register.

10% tariff? If the US consumer is lucky.

Trump and “his team” are telling us 25% tariff on everything from here - including those 4.2 million bbls/day (as of 3 January 2025) of oil we ship to those heavy oil refineries on your Gulf of Mexico coast.

https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/us-oil-imports-canada-hit-record-ahead-tariff-threat-eia-data-shows-2025-01-08/#:~:text=U.S. crude oil imports from Canada rose by 689%2C000 barrels,2010%2C the EIA data showed.

                      and here:

It really depends on the margin of the items. Shorter margin items will likely see a +10% increase, but not by that much. Maybe 12% ppm a Samsung TV, for instance. But on a higher margin type of purchase, my guess is that it’s between 5-7% increase.

I would guess that my (or Rich’s) selling price on a Bosie 230VC including local sales tax will still be less than a 230VC sold in London with a 20% VAT.

I haven’t touched a 230vc, but I did hear a nice recording. I am looking forward to trying one. Are you selling more satin or gloss finish?

Gloss, but I personally prefer the matte finish. Bosie’s matte is unique.

I've always preferred matte. I might get a chance to try a 230VC in April.

Good thing I don't have to make such a decision. I can only afford the decal and that negates all the finish anxiety stuff.
