It is petty. The fact that she’s following Trumps lead is no excuse. She should be better than that if only to make a point.

Indeed. It seems we are losing all civility.

I don’t see a problem with having them over so long as they remove their street shoes at the door. Preferably, the back door.

            https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/14/politics/michelle-obama-trump-inauguration/index.html

Former first lady Michelle Obama will not attend Donald Trump’s inauguration next week, her office said Tuesday, without providing an explanation for her decision.

“Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration,” a statement from the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama said.

The decision to forgo attendance at Trump’s formal swearing-in is a break with tradition for the ceremony, in which former presidents and their wives typically participate. Former President George W. Bush and Laura Bush will attend the inauguration, his office said, and sources familiar told CNN that former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton also will be there.

Michelle Obama also was not in attendance at a memorial service last week for former President Jimmy Carter, remaining instead in Hawaii. Former President Barack Obama attended the service at the National Cathedral in Washington, sitting next to Trump and engaging in animated conversation with him as the program was getting underway.

When Trump did it, it was because he genuinely believed the election was stolen, and was mortified that he would not be able to serve the country he loves more than life itself.

When Michelle does it, she's mean and petty.

                  Does that about cover it?

                  I was only joking

George should have just reactivated the thread he started four years ago calling Trump bitter and petty for not doing any of the ceremony around inauguration.

                        https://www.whitehousehistory.org/notably-absent-presidential-no-shows-on-inauguration-day

John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, Andrew Johnson, and Donald Trump – failed to attend the Inaugurations of their successors, while two more presidents – Woodrow Wilson and Richard Nixon – did not participate for other reasons.

What about Jack Kennedy? I guess he was on the plane.

Right, and clearly Kamala is being a bit petty.

I would however humbly suggest that any less-than-dignified behaviour the current administration is demonstrating pales into insignificance compared with the pathetic series of childish tantrums we all had to put up with four years ago, and which continued for quite some time afterwards. Indeed, I'm not wholly convinced they ever really ended.

The enmity between Adams and Jefferson was legendary, and lasted for years after Jefferson left office. Of course, they reconciled, much like Obama and Trump seem to have.

These things used to be so much more civilized. Why, I remember when the worst thing that could happen is having the outgoing administration strip the Whitehouse of artwork, silver, and other valuables while the staff damaged and ruined hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment. Good times!

Indeed, looting, vandalism and mischief are all far more civilized ways of flipping the bird than simply turning your back on the pompous protocol and decorum that acknowledges and celebrates an undeserving and narcissistic putz.
