Sam Esmail has spoken up about his now-confirmed Battlestar Galactica show, and revealed that it is not a remake of the 2004 Ron Moore-led series, but instead a new story within the mythology.
"BSG fans, this will NOT be a remake of the amazing series [Ron Moore] launched because... why mess with perfection?" he said on Twitter. "Instead, we’ll explore a new story within the mythology while staying true to the spirit of Battlestar. So say we all!"The wording of the tweet suggests that Esmail's show will explore different aspects of Battlestar Galactica's established mythos, perhaps akin to how Caprica was set within the same universe but explored the origins of the Cylons. With NBC's Peacock streaming service launching early next year, hopefully it won't be long until we find out more story details.
A reboot of Battlestar Galactica is in development at NBC, headed up by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail. The Hollywood Reporter details that its sources claim Esmail’s series will be an updated look at the Battlestar Galactica universe, and will take its inspiration from Ron Moore’s 2004 series, rather than the 1978 original from Glen A. Larson. The show, which has been commissioned straight-to-series, will be created for NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service.
Esmail will executive produce the series, and a writer has yet to be hired. The show will be made by Universal Content Productions, where Esmail already has an established deal to produce numerous shows. Battlestar Galactica will be his second show for NBCUniversal’s Peacock; he is also working on an adaptation of the sci-fi classic Metropolis.

I enjoyed the remake, but I must confess that I loved the original, too. It would be fun seeing more of the old Battlestar universe....

As a huge Babylon 5 fan, I could never warm to BG.
'Course, I only saw one episode (and only a part of that), so I'm probably not being strictly fair . . .

I was a huge B5 fan as well (as was, iirc, Phibes). It was a breakthrough show ("Let me tell you a story, it's going to take 5 years."). Though many compared it to DS9, I just couldn't warm up to DS9 because it seemed to episodic for my taste.
That said, Season 5 of B5 was a disappointment. Losing Michael O'Hare was bad enough, but when they were unsure as to the renewal status after S4, everything seemed rushed and disjointed - losing Claudia Christian, etc.
But, I get it - you work with what you have, not with what you want.

And there was the fabulous G'Kar.
And the unforgettable Londo and Vir.
And the being whose name I forget, who I thought of as 'the jukebox guy'.
Wah! I want it back!

Best line ever was Londo to Vir Cotto:
"You moon-faced assassin of joy."
Considering it was the early-mid 1990s, it was really transformative.
JMS (the writer of most of the episodes) was VERY active on usenet back then. There were long, long discussions about "arc" vs "non-arc" episodes, not to mention thoughts on religion, politics, etc.
Yeah, I miss it too.
If you liked B5, you should really check out "The Expanse" on Amazon prime. It's a another huge story with all kinds of political/religious/societal overtones. It'll take you 4 episodes to "get it." But, once you do, you're hooked. The books are fabulous as well.

Kosh was the being.
Also Mr. Morden was one of the oiliest of villains.
I love that show. Got the whole thing on DVD. Anybody remember DVD's?

Esmail's take on "Mr. Robot" was great.
It'll be interesting to see what he does with B5.
"Jukebox guy." Perfect.
