He's now proposing tariffs as temporary punitive measures that will be lifted once they fulfill certain conditions. This, while totally unrrelated to what he campaigned on, could make sense under certain conditions.
Of course I don't know the details of the legality given that NAFTA (or whatever it's called after Trump rebranded it) was a Senate-confirmed treaty.
“This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” the president-elect wrote.

Unfortunately I couldn't read the entire post because TruthSocial (sic) requires a login to read the whole thing.
So maybe he said something stupid in the same sentence. But generally, a punitive tariff pending a policy change is an idea I could support.

I wrote here months ago that carrot/stick tariffs were what he had done in the past and what I anticipate in the future.

I don’t get the threat to China over Fentanyl. I thought the cartels in Mexico were the main problem with Fentanyl proctor and exporting to the US?

I don't get the threat to Canada (other than the obvious...).
Is a significant portion of fentanyl coming across the northern border?

I think it’s manufactured there.

Supply management in agriculture products is a stickler and one any federal government on Canada wishes not to address given the strength of the agiculture lobbies in Ontario and Quebec. There is also the perennial dispute over softwood lumber.
Could also be leverage on our dismal record of Defence spending.
For our part it would be appreciated if the Trump Administration would be of assistance in curtailing the smuggling of illegal firearms from the US into this country.
At this stage it is nothing more than the usual deranged Trumpian social media bluster.

The threats are specifically speaking to Fentanyl smuggling.

He's replacing the war on drugs with a war on trade?

Highly educated, sophisticated, witty, good looking, with a charm he could only dream of possessing.
I can see why the insecure fat orange toe rag would be upset.

So what has that got to to do with bilateral trade between Canada and the US? Perhaps he did not get the memo how law enforcement and Customs officials on both sides of the 49th work together in busting criminal rings involved. Besides Canada is hardly a threat in this regard.
I am calling bullshit on that as a bilateral issue warranting punitive tarriffs on trade.

Not disagreeing with you, just stating that Trump couched the threat in terms of drug trafficking.

Wonderful, but probably not a perfect conversation. That would have come with a happy ending for all those concerned.

Yeah. He probably ... ahem... blew that load on a perfect conversation in 2017 or so.
