I'd like to read the NYT piece, but paywall. Anyway, Trump is far more normalized now than he was in 2016, and the never-Trumpers, whose primary weapon was always shame and sneering condescension, have indeed lost. As losers do, they are doing so quietly, and privately. The more intellectually honest among them, as well as those who really do want the best for the country, rather than just trying to win a tribal political game, are doing some soul searching, to try to be better.

In this election, legalistic tactics contributed to Mr. Trump’s victory, helping to produce the popular majority he had never boasted before."
Well, yeah, dumbass. Ask Dingy Harry.
Many spoken, unspoken and written rules exist to try to create an even societal battle ground. When one end of the political spectrum breaks those rules, the other end will always follow suit.
Right now, if he doesn't go too far, I think Trump could use the government to make some people's lives miserable. And most people would file it under the street statement, Don't start no shit, unless you want shit started.

Some people are also fond of variations on the theme of "fucking around and finding out".
Anyway, I hope Trump keeps a lid on it. These things will inevitably escalate, as each side exaggerates the severity of what the other side did to it, and then amps up their own behavior to coincide. Just a macrocosm of what anybody can observe in more microcosmic personal relationships gone bad, between two people who can't de-escalate because they both need to win.

I think for the most part, Trump will dial it back a bit. After all, he didn't pursue anything against Hillary. I don't think he'll go after Biden. Shucks, he may even pardon Hunter.
OTOH, I wouldn't want to be Garland...
