I can't see Pritzker getting very far. He's just not that cuddly, engaging or smart. His policies are too conventionally Democratic.

This is good training for those of us who can't imagine not taking a politician seriously. Observe yourself in how you react to this politician's words, and try to figure out how you're managing to not take him seriously, in his literal threat to take up arms against the federal government.

Pritzker surprised many by not raising taxes and even reining in some spending, including nixing a health-care program for undocumented adult aliens.
“We have to live within our means. If you come to the table looking to spend more — I’m going to ask you where you want to cut,” Pritzker lectured the liberal legislature. “Economic growth is an essential ingredient that allows us to move beyond a challenging budget year like this one.”
Democrats sat on their hands when they heard that part of Pritzker’s speech. But other observers cheered his new pragmatism. “A budget free at last from tax increases should begin to send a message to job creators that the state’s leaders understand they’re in a competition with other states for business investment,” wrote the Chicago Tribune.

Trump's lasting impact will be to have made the Democrats a better party with better ideas. There really is nothing he can't do.

The biggest Rahm-may-run tell, though, is that he’s already road-testing the first outlines of a stump speech, or at least an issue he can make his own.
I caught it last month when he came to Washington to appear before a conference held by Democracy Forward, a liberal group helping to lead litigation efforts against the Trump administration.
“I am done with the discussion of locker rooms, I am done with the discussion of bathrooms and we better start having a conversation about the classroom,” Emanuel said, drawing applause as he alluded to a new study showing more than two-thirds of eighth graders can’t read at grade level.
He kept coming back to the study and eventually and explicitly tied the policy to the politics, in Rahm’ian fashion.
“We can lead a discussion and force a topic onto the agenda of this country that’s worthy of having a debate about,” Emanuel said about the dismal student data. Unlike, say, the fate of a heretofore obscure federal agency, whose demise dominated elite coverage in the first weeks of Trump’s presidency. “The New York Times put crumbs all the way to the front door of the USAID headquarters and we just walked along back there,” he lamented of his party.

David Axelrod, a longtime friend of Rahm, has also warmed to the idea. “Who has more relevant experience?” Axelrod asked, adding that Emanuel has two other alluring assets for his party right now. “He understands how to win and speaks bluntly in an idiom that most folks understand.”

I've heard him on right-leaning podcasts, thinking and speaking reasonably, and taking the right-leaning concerns seriously, as if adults might have them. This is the template that the left has been unable to muster, but now a bunch of their politicians are adopting it. It was never that fucking hard, but here we are.

If Pritzker runs, Republicans will be certain to highlight the challenges Illinois faces. Private sector jobs have been stagnant since he took office, and a massive unfunded pension liability hangs over the state like a black cloud. Taxes are among the highest in the nation, and the state’s population has shrunk since 2020. Violent crime and struggling schools plague Chicago, a favorite target for Trump and conservatives.
“People are voting with their feet,” said Paul Vallas, a conservative-leaning Democrat who is a former Chicago public schools chief and past city budget director. “The state is an absolute disaster.”
Pritzker took over in 2019 amid a budget crisis. He has supported Illinois legislation to protect abortion access, mandate paid time off for workers, raise the minimum wage to $15 for nontipped workers 18 and older, tighten gun restrictions and invest in infrastructure.
He has aggressively recruited businesses, including in quantum computing, and worked to restore some order to state budgeting, helping prompt Moody’s to raise the Illinois credit rating three times during his tenure.

While he grew up in privilege in California, Pritzker hasn’t had an entirely easy life. As a 7-year-old, his 39-year-old father died while playing tennis in Hawaii. His mother, an alcoholic and Democratic activist who introduced him to politics at a young age, was killed a decade later when after driving drunk she jumped from a moving tow truck after her car broke down.
