    Some pushback from the GOP.

“I was shocked by the announcement — that shows why the advise and consent process is so important,” said Senator Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, who has sometimes clashed with Mr. Trump. “I’m sure that there will be a lot of questions raised at his hearing.”

“I don’t think he’s a serious candidate,” Senator Lisa Murkowski, an Alaska Republican who also has broken with Mr. Trump frequently, said of Mr. Gaetz.

Even some of Mr. Trump’s stalwart supporters declined to offer support.

Senator John Barrasso, Republican of Wyoming, refused to speak specifically about Mr. Gaetz’s candidacy, repeating that he was looking forward to all of Mr. Trump’s nominees receiving confirmation hearings and getting the president-elect’s cabinet in place.

Senator Chuck Grassley, Republican of Iowa and a former chair of the Judiciary Committee, stood expressionless as reporters asked him if he had any concerns about Gaetz, refusing to answer.

    You were warned.

Probably deserves its own thread. Probably the only thing he deserves.

So, does this mean the FBI/ethics inquiries go away?

If Collins and Teh Murk are joined by Grassley, the Senate ties. Would JD do the right thing?

I don’t think Gaetz would get 50 votes.

              The day evening is young.

Someone commented that there was an audible gasp among Republicans when it was announced.

President-elect Trump's latest selection for his next administration is facing immediate backlash from some within the Senate GOP, as they say his attorney general pick, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., will not get confirmed.

"He will never get confirmed," a Republican senator, granted anonymity to speak freely, told Fox News Digital.

One Senate Republican source simply said, "Ain’t gonna happen," about the prospect of Gaetz's confirmation....

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, told reporters, "I think we have to consider any nominee by the president seriously, but we also have a constitutional responsibility."

It will seem more reasonable when his second choice of Don Jr is announced.

Would like to believe this is strategic in some way that acknowledges the hopelessness of confirmation, but I'm not seeing it. It just seems stupid, and detached from the reality of no confirmation.

He might have done it to take eyes of his semi-questionable picks. Usually one, maybe two nominees fail.

                                          From NRO...

                                          https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/trump-dares-the-senate-to-vote-down-matt-gaetz/

Matt Gaetz is such a terrible choice for attorney general that the odds are already high, within an hour of his nomination being announced, that he would fail a Senate confirmation vote.

It’s impossible to imagine any Democrat voting for him, so he can afford to lose only three Republicans (even assuming all 53 are there — a vote might have to wait for a replacement for Marco Rubio to be selected and seated, because Rubio will need to be confirmed himself before resigning). It’s not very hard to count to four votes on the Republican side (starting with Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins) who will be against him.

Will Trump insist on a vote if the numbers aren’t there? While every administration sends up some nominees who fail, they usually withdraw.

A failed Gaetz nomination, if it goes to a vote and is killed by fellow Republicans, would make him an immediate martyr in some MAGA corners. That could well be a blessing to Gaetz, just in time for a primary fight to either succeed Ron DeSantis as governor of Florida in 2026 or in that fall’s special election (perhaps, against DeSantis or a DeSantis appointee) to fill the remainder of Rubio’s term.
