Longo – who says he still hasn’t received any word from officials about the animals — previously insisted that the animals were rabies-free.
Not sure how the people would know. It is a wild animal afterall.
But the whole situation does seem like a big overreaction from the health dept.

Squirrel had been living in captivity for seven years. Squirrels have only transmitted rabies to a total of 17 people in the U.S., with the last case in 1992. Couple of reasons for that... 1) they don't get the disease very often, and 2) if they do, they die quickly, often within hours.
Raccons are a bit different.
