Because of obvious reasons, the Feds have more of a toehold in public universities. Their power in private universities comes through the student loan program and Pell Grants.
Either way, some of what he's saying makes sense... Free speech needs to be protected on campus. Parents should receive a quality education for their children in the minimum amount of time (no politically oriented puff classes). Some degrees need consolidation. Minimum standards might be considered. Student loans need reforming.
OTOH, I'm not entirely happy with the Feds getting into the weeds of higher ed. I think the market will sort out a lot of it.

I’d take a look at DeSantis and Rufos approach in Florida.
I would also completely revamp the Federal Pell Grants and College Loan system. All Pell Grants for the first 2 years must be used at a community college or trade school. Same with Federal Subsidized College Loans.

One of the main reasons so many students are $100K in debt upon graduation is the push to go to the 4 year schools at +$30K per year. Recipients of Pell Grants are coming from the poorest families, the ones most likely to rack up the highest debt loads. Over the first 2 years, they are likely going to rack up at least $50K in debt to acquire 30ish credits that could have been acquired for free based on the average Pell Grant. It also encourages students that otherwise wouldn’t have gone to school at all to look at Trade Schools and increase their chances at success.
Student Choice? They have all the choice they want. Just not with public funding. Boohoohoo.

Probably not immediately, but do you think they’ll learn to adapt real fast with that money coming in? I certainly do. Beyond that, market forces will wind up pushing the 4 year degree schools to make their own adjustments.

The cheapest public university in Louisiana is LSUA. Tuition for in-state is $7050 (2 semesters) and that includes fees. It has exhibited fast growth in the last ten years, going from about 1600 to 5000 students. It would probably have 7000, but housing is a problem.
Degrees are limited.

I suspect that this fight-picking by Trump is strategic in that it is intended to rabble rouse the epicenter of the woke nonsense that helps keep Maga politically resonant. Jon often makes the point that Trump will increase wokeness, but it's obvious, based on voter surveys after this election, that that works to the advantage of Maga.

I think this speaks to his base but also to the working class. There are guys out there who have blue collar jobs and the wife works a pink collar job. They scrimp, save and send their two kids to university, for "a better life". The kids have to borrow money to complete their degree.
Maybe the kids get sold a load of BS from a faculty advisor pushing a low completer program. They graduate from school inoculated in liberal Marxism, past their eyeballs in debt with a degree in post-1800 feminism and they're not qualified to sell used cars.
Dad and mom are pissed.

I didn't mean to imply that it was totally cynical politics. I think the policy direction is resonant, too. But the political aspect of it might have played a role in making this announcement front and center, the very first public volley, right at the heart of the woke hysteria that helps keep Maga in office.

On the subject of woke resurgence, we got an internal message that our company has recently re-launched its Women's Empowerment Group, membership open only to women. The timing being what it was, I doubt this group would have re-launched if Harris had won. I don't know what the practical effect of their group might be, but sniffing out Trump supporters and marginalizing them would probably be one of the practical considerations, even if not explicitly stated.
