What waws the point of the seizure and subsequent killing? I don't understand. Surely pets are not illegal in NYC.
The squirrel bit the investigator that was holding it. As there are no vaccines for rabies for squirrels, the animal had to be destroyed to be tested for rabies. I don’t get the raccoon at all…

The squirrel was killed for spite.
I have little doubt that this whole kerfuffle is politically motivated Peanut's owners have said they're not political.
But, as a cudgel to represent overreach of government by petty tyrants, it's a pretty good tool.
Also, Peanut's owner have moved to file suit. No idea what the basis is, but, it'll be fun to watch it play out.
On an unrelated note, our second bird, a Blue-Front Amazon, was named "Peanuts."

I think they most likely mistook it for the moose that has been, for quite a few years now, closely associated with the squirrel.

As an example of overbearing government? Certainly.
Who does it help when both candidates are pro big government and believe government can/should solve everything?

Does this story have electoral legs?
The still-working-for-the-Washington-Post "Brava" lady seems to think so.
