I used to think this was a stupid rule since no one is likely to be swayed by seeing a political sign or hat.

But the real reason for the rule is probably to prevent fights.

It's to prevent fights, and to prevent intimidation. Can you imagine going to a polling place and seeing a hundred elderly white women wearing "Hate Has No Home Here" shirts? It would be terrifying.
