How many first time hires used to get let go back in the days when kids were all awesome?
-
TBH, not many. I was a country kid, raised with a bunch of other country kids. What needed doing, got done. Didn't matter how hot, how cold, how dry, how wet. If a fence is broke, mend it. If the stock needs feeding, feed them. If the garden needs picking, you pick.
I've gone to pick up my wife for a Saturday night date and have to cool my heels, while she was washing off the dust from hauling square bales of hay. And I'm not talking driving the tractor, I'm talking chunking bales up on the trailer.
In my world, kids knew how to work and it carried over to adulthood.

I wonder if the old people back then would have shared your high opinion of your character
