Based on my research, making applesauce at home with regular apples costs $0.14 per ounce, while buying regular applesauce at the store can cost as little as $0.09 per ounce. This means that making applesauce from regular apples at home costs $0.05 more per ounce than buying regular applesauce from the store.

My MIL used to make applesauce and hers was a LOT better than store bought. Had a huge apple tree in their back yard.

If you have a food processor, you can make a version that doesn't even require cooking. Just the apples and a little cinnamon. And a pinch of salt, if you want.
